Medical Expense Deduction

About medical expense deduction

background

What is the dental medical expense deduction?

Medical expense deduction is a system that allows you to deduct a certain amount from your income when you pay medical expenses for yourself or your family.
The cost of orthodontic treatment is eligible for medical expense deduction.
Medical expense deductions are a system established to reduce the burden of medical expenses, and if you incur medical expenses of more than 100,000 yen in a year, you will receive a portion of your income tax back.
If you have paid medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, or other relatives who share the same household (for the period from January 1st to December 31st of each month), you can receive a medical expense deduction and receive a tax refund or reduction if you declare the expenses by March 15th of the following year.
However, you will not be eligible unless your annual medical expenses total more than 100,000 yen.
(The maximum amount that can be declared is 2 million yen.) Those whose total income is up to 2 million yen can declare it if their medical expenses amount to 5% or more of their income.

Regarding deduction amount

The amount to be deducted is calculated as follows:

Medical Expense Deduction

(Maximum 2 million yen)

=

Total medical expenses paid in one year

Medical expenses paid between January 1st and December 31st of that year.

-

Amount reimbursed through insurance premiums, etc.

-

100,000 yen or 5% of income
Whichever is less

The higher your income, the higher your tax rate, so the higher your income, the larger the refund you will receive.

Medical expenses eligible for medical expense deduction

Medical fees and treatment costs paid to doctors and dentists
Cost of purchasing medicines for treatment
Travel expenses normally required for going to the hospital or being hospitalized (train fares, bus fares, taxi fares, etc.)
Treatment fees for treatment by a massage therapist, acupuncturist, or moxibustion therapist for medical purposes
· others

What you need to get a refund

Final (refund) tax return (salary earners: tax withholding slip)
Receipt (copies are not allowed)
Seal, bank passbook, etc.

*Final (refund) tax return forms are available at your local tax office.
*The filing period is from February 16th to March 15th of the following year. However, refunds for salaried employees will be accepted from January onwards.
